Malaysia

Climate
Malaysia is a beautiful country with tropical sun all year round. She also boasts of having probably the oldest rainforest jungles of the world. With approximately 4,675 km of coastline facing the South China Sea and Straits of Malacca, Malaysia has some of the most beautiful beaches with underwater safari heaven.

With temperatures in the lowlands range from 21ºC (70ºF) to 32ºC (90ºF), Malaysia is one of the best Summer Holidays destinations in the world. The highlands with temperatures range between 15°C (59° F) to 25°C (77°F) also balance out the holidays experience. Locations such as the Cameron Highland towns of Brinchang and Tanah Rata in Perak state and Genting Highland Entertainment City in Pahang state are some of the most visited chilling highlands in Malaysia.

Geography
Malaysia is comprised of 13 states in 2 land mass separated by the South China Sea, the West Malaysia (or Peninsular Malaysia) and East Malaysia which is consisted of the states of Sabah and Sarawak that makes up a third of the island Borneo bordering Indonesia in the southern island and Brunei in northeast of Sarawak. The states of Perlis, Kedah, Perak and Kelantan in West Malaysia borders to Thailand in the north while the state of Johor borders to Singapore gapped by the Straits of Johor.

West Malaysia is separated into east and west coast by a range of mountains with the highest peak, Gunung Tahan (Mount Tahan) sitting at a height of 2,187 m located within the Taman Negara (National Forest Reserve) in the state of Pahang. While the east coast faces the South China Sea, the west coast runs along the Straits of Malacca, which separates West Malaysia from the Island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The country’s highest peak at 4,095 m, Gunung Kinabalu (Mount Kinabalu) is located in Sabah, northern Borneo while the country’s longest river, the Sungai Rejang (Rejang River) with a length of 563 km is located in Sarawak.

The capital city of Kuala Lumpur resides in one of the three Federal Territories (independent of State rule), which itself is located in the heart of the state of Selangor. Putrajaya (in southern state of Selangor), which is also the country’s administration centre, and Labuan Island (west to Sabah state) completes the Federal Territories.

People
The country’s population is at 25,274,132 (July 2008 estimates) with most resides in the west coast of West Malaysia especially in Kuala Lumpur city centre, major cities in Selangor, Penang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. Malaysians are made up of majority Malays with minority races of Chinese and Indians and other indegeniouses. Although Islam is the official religion, other mainstream religions are practiced freely.

Being a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country, Malaysia becomes a potpourri of festivities, celebrations and lifestyles of various Asian cultures. Surprisingly, differences are not only tolerated but are embraced and practiced over time. Most noticeable are languages and cultures. After hundred years of inter-mingling of various people from across Asia, truly unique inter-mixed cultures not seen in other parts of Asia is born. It is no wonder then that the Tourism Malaysia agency uses the tagline: Malaysia, truly Asia!

Although Bahasa Malaysia (Malay language) is the official language, being a former British colony, English are widely spoken and practiced especially in the business sector.

Politic
Malaysia is governed by a Parliamentary democracy with a bicameral legislative system consisting of the Dewan Negara (Senate) and House of Representatives (whom members are elected to a five year term). The Head of State is the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (King), a position that is awarded to a different State Monarch every five years and the Head of Government is the Prime Minister.

Economy
Manufacturing (especially electronics) constitutes the largest component of Malaysia's economy. Tourism and primary commodities such as petroleum, palm oil (world’s largest exporter), natural rubber and timber are other major contributors to the economy.

The Malaysian currency is denoted as Ringgit Malaysia (RM) and is valued approximately USD1 to RM3.60. Foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks and moneychangers in most commercial establishments.
